Busting the 4 Most Common Fitness Myths We Hear at the Gym

There’s a lot of noise in the fitness world — and unfortunately, not all of it is true. We hear a lot of the same misconceptions from new clients, and we’re here to clear things up. Let’s bust a few of the most common fitness myths we hear at MVP and other gyms.

"Lifting weights will make me bulky."

Truth: Building large amounts of muscle takes years of intense training and very specific nutrition. For most people, lifting weights helps burn fat, tone muscle, and improve metabolism — not bulk up. Don’t skip the strength training!


"If I’m not sore, I didn’t work hard enough."

Soreness can happen, but it’s not the best marker of a good workout. You can build strength, burn calories, and improve fitness without feeling like you can’t walk the next day. In fact, soreness that’s too intense might be a sign you overdid it.


"Cardio is the best (or only) way to lose weight."

Cardio has its benefits, but combining it with strength training is the most effective route to long-term fat loss and improved health. Strength training builds lean muscle — and lean muscle burns more calories at rest. Our bootcamp classes are an excellent way to get a full body workout and feel the burn!


"I have to work out every day to see results."

Rest days are essential. Your body needs time to recover and rebuild stronger. You can make great progress with 3–5 consistent workouts per week, especially when you’re focused and intentional.
